I believe that this is one of the most beautiful photos of the Hungarian countess Geraldine Apponyi, who came to Albania at the end of 1937 to meet her future husband, King Zog.

The photo was taken in Tirana and I am publishing it in its original size.

Geraldine, a Catholic girl with an American mother, was 22 at the time. "One of the most prominent and seductive beauties of the Hungarian aristocracy will sit on the Albanian throne," a newspaper wrote.

From her father, Count Anton Apponyi, Geraldina inherited the gift of learning foreign languages and spoke English, French, German and Italian. Shortly before coming to Albania, she worked at the Hungarian National Museum where knowledge of foreign languages was required. Time showed that Geraldina learned Albanian quite well, even though she stayed only one year in Albania.

In the main hall of the Museum were exhibited reproductions of photographs, which were bought by visitors. Geraldine worked in this room and also served as a guide for foreigners coming to the Museum, or assisting the archivist.

In the fall of 1937, Zog's three sisters met her at the Museum and she donated an autographed photo of her. Zogu later sent a courier, who invited Geraldine to attend a courtyard party in Tirana. The courier had brought a large bouquet of flowers and she learned for the first time that the king of Albania was looking for a princess for the Albanian throne.

At first Geraldina refused because she thought such a union, simply for state reasons, would be loveless marriage and did not match her idea of a romantic relationship.

Finally, she decided to give the Albanian king a chance. During a trip to Rome, Geraldina returned to Budapest with a stop in Tirana and discovered with pleasure that it was not difficult to fall in love with Zog, a man who seemed brave and determined. This was her first visit to Albania.

She married Zog on April 27, 1938, but a year later Albania was invaded by Italy and her dreams came to an end. Geraldina returned to Albania after more than six decades and passed away on October 22, 2002.

With an always smiling face, with a slightly shy and noble nature, with a gentle word, the countess became a calming presence for the harsh Albanians.

We can say no without pride that at the top of the state, at the top, we once had a wise woman who radiated kindness, patience, modesty and civilization to other citizens. It is not easy to have such people.
