The Albanian legislation does not recognize the Greek ethnic minority in Himare, however the two candidates announced so far for mayor of this municipality are identified as Greeks. Petro Gjikuria from the opposition will challenge Vangjel Tavo from the Socialists. The identification as Greeks is the common profile of the two candidates, but they differ in terms of their approach to the electorate and the contribution they have made to Albania.
Vangjel Tavo is a veteran politician and more connected to the country of Albania, while Petro Gjikuria, with the profile of a businessman, comes from the United States of America with the promise that he has open doors not only in Tirana, but also in Athens, Brussels, and even in Washington.
He has exercised his entrepreneurial activity mainly across the Atlantic, from where he is also engaged in the Panepirote Federation of America. The federation is led by Nikolas Geix, famous for his anti-Albanian calls.
In 2019, after being re-elected at the head of this federation, Geixh declared that he would lobby hard in Washington and Brussels to block the membership negotiations for Albania, until Tirana, as he claimed, provides the Greeks with religious and educational rights , political, linguistic and cultural.
Petro Gjikuria has an active role in this federation, while on August 14 of last year he participated in a protest organized in Himare, where the release of Fredi Beleri was demanded. In that protest, he also gave a speech in Greek, where he considered the arrest of Beler as political and with fabricated charges.
