Hunger? We remain the first in the region. Index: Although far from countries

The Global Hunger Index for 2024 ranks Albania in 42nd place among the 127 countries analyzed, while it is evaluated with 7.9 points. During the year 2023, Albania was ranked 30th and was evaluated with 6.1 points.

The increase in the score shows that we are almost two points closer to the countries with the highest level of hunger. The Global Hunger Index is a comprehensive tool that tracks and measures hunger at global, regional and national levels.

This report analyzes only developing countries and measures hunger based on the values of four indicator components which are the under-five mortality rate, the prevalence of child loss, the prevalence of underdeveloped children, and the percentage of undernourished.

If we were to compare Albania with the countries of the region, the data of the "Global Hunger Index" for the year 2024 show that we have the most negative position. Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia are among the top 22 countries with low levels of hunger, scoring less.

Meanwhile, on the other hand, the report lists the countries that suffer from an extremely alarming situation regarding the level of hunger. Countries like Yemen, Madagascar, Somalia are the last countries in the ranking which have the highest level of hunger.

Among other things, the report emphasizes that the "Global Hunger Index" in this year's edition puts us in front of a grim reality. The results for the world reflect overlapping global and local crises including the consequences of violent conflicts or even natural disasters around the world.

These events have pushed some countries into food crises, while other countries have responded with resilience. Low- and middle-income countries have been hit particularly hard compared to high-income countries.
