Floods, over 18 million euros for the rehabilitation of the water basin of Ishmi

After one of the hottest and driest summers ever, infrequent but heavy autumn rains are fueling flooding, bringing back recurring flood woes. Lezha, Dibra, Durrësi and Tirana are four of the counties that are at great risk this year. The River Ishêm is the reason.

The phenomenon is repeated on the same surface, affecting an average surface of about 2000 ha. River floods last from an hour to more than two days, depending on the type of event. In the lower parts, the water crosses the banks of the rivers, causing economic damage and threatening the population living in the flood plain, mainly in Fushë Krujë.

The government plans to spend over 18 million euros for the rehabilitation of the Ishmi water basin. Most of the money, over 11 million euros, is expected to be financed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. The rest of the money will come from Tirana Municipality and other local government institutions.

The work will include the rehabilitation of the embankments in the Gjola and Iše rivers.

The main objectives are the improvement of organizational and professional capacities for flood risk management, the prevention of new risks, the reduction of existing ones as well as the reduction of negative consequences after a flood event, where the main goal is the prevention and reduction of consequences for human health , the environment, cultural heritage and economic activity, in the respective areas.

About 24 million euros of economic damage, mainly in housing and agriculture, was caused by the exit from the bed of the Išem river in 2020. There was also significant damage to roads or commercial and industrial buildings.
