Cotonella" Italian brand of intimate clothing moves production from Albania

Since 1996, Shkodra has been the main production and logistics center for the production of intimate clothing outside Italy for the company "Cotonella", a leader in the neighboring market that is now a well-known international brand.

With the increase in production costs in Albania, due to the devaluation of the euro and the minimum wage, the Italian company is withdrawing part of the production to move to Uzbekistan.

The owner of the company "Albania Tricot", Gjergj Leqejza, which produces for "Cotonella", affirmed that "in order to be competitive in the market and as a result of the increase in the fabric price, Cotonella spa has decided to start production in Uzbekistan".

Production in Albania will continue, but it will be more limited, said Leqejza, who announced a reduction in activity and a reduction in the number of employees during this year that has just started.

In 1996 "Cotonella" chose Albania to build the first production plant outside Italy. Then in 2008 the production factory in Shkodër in Albania inaugurated a modern fabric cutting laboratory and becomes an international logistics center for all "Cotonella".

But as production prices in Albania changed due to the increase in the minimum wage and the fall of the euro at a time when the Italian market showed a decrease in the demand for intimate clothing due to the inflation crisis, the directors of "Cotonella" decided to move the production from Albania.

The media in Uzbekistan have reported that in the middle of this year the Italian textile brand "Cotonella" chooses Uzbekistan to locate its products. The management of the company decided to open a factory in the Kashkadarya region. "Cotonella" plans to gradually move production to Uzbekistan. In the first phase after the start of work at the factory, it is planned to produce up to 2 million pieces of ready-made knitwear per year, providing permanent employment for up to 80 people. Then "Cotonella" intends to invest about 5 million dollars to increase the production of products to 8 million units per year and it is intended to open up to 500 new permanent jobs.

Founded in 1972, the Italian clothing company "Cotonella" is one of the leading brands of underwear for women, men and children. The company produces more than 20 million products per year, which are sold in 24 European countries.

The sector that works with commissioned material is going through a difficult situation in the country due to the increase in production costs and wages and the fall of the euro. Exports of textiles and footwear fell by 5.8% for the 11th month of 2023, while in November the deepest contraction since the pandemic was recorded, by 19%. / Monitor
