After starting the year with a slight increase, the level of non-performing loans recorded a low in February. According to data from the Bank of Albania, in February, non-performing loans reached 4.69% of the total, recording the lowest historical level. Meanwhile, in January they were at the level of 4.88%.

During the past year, non-performing loans fluctuated in the range above 5%, reaching a maximum of 5.3% in August. But the quality of the loan portfolio has improved further over the end of the year, defying initial expectations that inflation and the record-high increase in the base interest rate to 3.25% would add to non-performing loans.

Meanwhile, the indicator of net non-performing loans from provisions to regulatory capital followed the same downward trajectory during the month of February, which was recorded at 5.58% of the total, from 5.77% in January.

Even the net non-performing loans from provisions to equity were 5.18% in February, compared to 5.43% recorded in the first month of this year. The second half of 2023 marked an increase in the caution of banks in approving loans, but also a change in the behavior of businesses and individuals, who were strongly oriented towards lending in Lek, against loans in the common European currency.

Problem loans started a dangerous growth trajectory after the global financial crisis that hit the world and Europe in particular, to culminate in 25% of the total loans in 2015 in our country.
