At a time when science and innovation are developing at a rapid pace, Albania ranks last in the region for scientific research.

The prestigious Science study measures articles published in all European countries in the fields of physics, biology, chemistry, mathematics, medicine, biotechnology, engineering and earth and space sciences.

According to the number of published scientific publications, which functions as a parameter for measuring scientific research, Albania ranks last in Europe.

Albania results with 6 articles published per 100 thousand individuals, which is calculated as the lowest level in all of Europe.

In a regional view, Serbia leads with 69 articles per 100 thousand individuals, Montenegro follows with 50, North Macedonia with 21 and Kosovo with 15.

Albania has shown an obvious lack of investment in research and development compared to other countries in the region. This has led to a deep gap in the scientific and innovative capacity of the country.

At a time when science and technology play a key role in economic and social development, the lack of serious efforts to strengthen this sector is becoming a serious obstacle for Albania. Meanwhile, other countries in the region are benefiting from their investments in research and development to build a more innovative and sustainable economy.

According to experts in the field, one of the main problems is limited scientific education and the lack of specialized programs at higher levels of education.

Albanian students are often forced to seek opportunities for education and training abroad to benefit from the latest knowledge and techniques in various scientific fields.

Another problem that has influenced Albania's low ranking in scientific research is the lack of international cooperation and useful connections with other scientific institutions and organizations. This has made it difficult for Albanian scientists and students to actively participate in international projects and knowledge exchange.
