Forgetting your roots

By Adrian Thano

In a world that fears aging as an inevitable punishment, Alejandro Jodorowsky – artist, philosopher, and probably the poet who has written the most about aging – reminds us that it is not a decline, but a deepening.

In one of his poems, he says: "I have not grown old. I have become a child who knows many things."

Societies today no longer respect wrinkles, memories, wisdom. We live in an era that measures value by appearance, numbers, and followers on social media. We live in a world that is in a hurry and has no patience for the stories of memory.

No society will become truly humane unless it learns to bow – not out of pity, but out of respect – before those who have lived the longest.

Our society is no exception.

Our elders stood the test of time, even when it was more difficult than today. They built this society with their own hands, they endured poverty with dignity.

Now, in the years when they deserve more care, more respect, more support – we have left them waiting in line for medicines and counting money for bills; living on pensions that don't even cover basic needs.

They deserve much more than being a number in insurance statistics.

The most poignant irony is that this category of society is also the most loyal at the ballot box. Albanian politicians know well that victory passes through this age group, and yet, after taking their vote, they treat them as numbers and not as people.

Personal privileges are placed above the needs and suffering of those who have given so much during their lives. While an elderly person struggles to survive on 100 or 200 euros a month, the deputies of the Albanian Parliament, with a self-proclaimed decision, increased their salaries to levels that seem shameless in the face of an elderly population that can barely afford medicine.

This is the height of political hypocrisy.

We are a society that honors the dead with noise, but forgets the living in silence.

Those who once carried this country on their shoulders are now seen as a burden. And this is the biggest fault of a country that is growing without roots. / Gazeta Dita
