Bread, Berlusconi and his tears

Italy after the 90s would no longer be the Italy of a country that recognized the splendor of a zenith that had been reached in the years of great industrialization of the 70s and 80s. The golden hand extended by the friend across the Pacific saved it from the devastation brought by one of the most tragic wars in the history of the 20th century.

World War Two.

That era developed Italian cinema, spectacle and a fashion industry that had never been seen before. All in all, an extreme flood of strategy in a country that was considered quite the victim of an alliance that, despite being on the wrong side of the axis, was never seen as an enemy.

And why this strange history of belonging to Italy?

And why only this history of Italy was approached so friendly by the allies of the anti-fascist axis?

Has the Italian pasta influenced you? The scent of Tuscany? Or Italian generosity and long-suffering for every victim of war or in every case when the other is in danger?

Silvio Berlusconi, the man whose name marked an era in the history of Italy, passed away a few days ago. He was considered a friend of the Albanians.

But Berlusconi is not the purpose of my writing. The video shared on the day of his death conveyed to me the feeling I experience every time I have a drive or a moment of thought about this country and this people.

Tearful for the Albanian tragedy in the Otranto Channel, on March 28, 1997, also known as the Kater Rada flood, he said that this cannot be the face of Italy. The face of someone throwing someone into the sea who is fleeing from evil seeking salvation and escape in a place he considers a friend.

A crime has occurred.

The Albanian ship with 142 people on board was overturned by the Italian naval forces in the Strait of Otranto, causing the loss of life of 57 people, aged between 3 and 69 years.

But what did Cavalieri have in mind when he couldn't hold back his tears and like a Silvio - a child on a boat he was released towards the excited journalists?

No western titleholder in all those years in Albania had felt the same disaster in flesh and blood as Cavalieri witnessed.

Still not today.

What was this love of Italy towards another in danger that he conveyed so longingly, stripping himself of the invincible strength of a great tycoon?

You say something more than Christian is hidden inside that Italian paste that still holds humanity around the world?

Love...

Sensitivity...

Loyalty...

Its winter.

Napoli, 1946.

The war is over. Not yet hunger and misery. In the alleys of the Spanish neighborhoods of Naples, children eat what they find around or steal from the market. Barefoot because the families have no money to buy shoes, they easily learn to become breadwinners.

Bread and whatever provides them with daily living.

This is the poor childhood of the southern Italian city. And not only hers.

Of all the states that came out of such a war.

But what happened in Italy that could not produce such an example?

U shpik treni i lumturisë. Cili ishte ai?

Mendojeni pak.

Like that story I introduced you to earlier. And which few people know, but which represents the foundation of Italian society in the second half of the 20th century.

A story of solidarity, a prelude to the economic boom that Italy would know in the 60s. An era where people understood and fought for certain rights that were denied to them at the time.

It was about the Italian workers.

Italian pasta? Why are they so good, I asked the old Italian some time ago. When the flour is cooked, he told me, it keeps a yeast.

It is the fermentation of a happy tear.

The tear that carried the 'happiness train', I said to myself. Children's train.
