New archaeological discoveries in the Memaliaj–Tepelena area

The Institute of Archaeology (ASHS) in collaboration with Sweet Briar University, USA, conducted research and excavations at the "Matohasanaj" fortress, within the framework of the broader Landscape Archaeology project in the Memaliaj-Tepelena Area.

The research brought to light a public building, built during the 3rd-2nd centuries BC, with later interventions in Late Antiquity, as well as one of the entrances to the fortress.

These works were carried out with the support of the Regional Directorate of Cultural Heritage of Gjirokastra and the Ministry of Economy, Culture and Innovation.

Observations in the territory have revealed a series of structures that may be related to residential areas, as well as new lines of fortification walls.

The results of the research to date are of particular importance, as they change the previous perception of Matohasanaj, from a purely military fortress, to an important center for the surrounding community, with public and private buildings.
