Archaeologists return to Gjirokastra Castle

After an absence of about 30 years, archaeologists have returned to the Gjirokastra castle to continue archaeological studies and excavations.

The goal of the National Institute of Cultural Heritage's expedition is to identify new findings that shed light on the history of this castle of extraordinary value.

Currently, the works are concentrated near the main entrance of the castle, where the first fragments of a stone tower dating back to the 4th-6th centuries AD have been discovered.

Excavations will continue throughout July, in several key areas of the castle, aiming not only to document the findings, but also to improve the visitor map of this monument.

The Gjirokastra Castle, which is first mentioned in documents dating back to 1336, is believed to have earlier origins.

This historical monument is among the most visited in the country and functions as an important center for organizing cultural events of a national and international nature.
