Jani Aliaj, the 49-year-old Albanian who was killed yesterday in the Koridhalos prison in Greece, had "protected status" after another assassination attempt was made on him in the same prison 6 months earlier.
According to Greek media, the 49-year-old was targeted by his rivals and had even been held in a cell with a police officer who was accused of drugs.
Aliaj was stabbed inside his cell by a person who is considered a hitman and had previously killed another Albanian, Artur Bashimi.
The 49-year-old from Tepelena, who had been arrested in Greece since December 31, 2024.
Aliaj was sentenced to life in prison in Albania for the murder of Elton Çiço in 2016 in Tirana, in a long-standing conflict between them that ended in revenge and fatality.
He was also accused of an incident that occurred in 2015 in Përmet, where an attempted theft of a large quantity of marijuana ended in injuries.
