A criminal group has been "dismantled" by authorities in neighboring Greece.

According to local media, members of this criminal group stole vehicles and then exported them across the Greek-Albanian border with the aim of selling them.

Members of this group initially patrolled neighborhoods, mainly at night, and stole luxury SUVs parked outside.

After stealing them, they put fake license plates on them accompanied by registration permits that corresponded to vehicles of the same make, model, and color, and ultimately exported them across the Greek-Albanian border abroad with the aim of selling them.

It is learned that the leader of this criminal group turns out to be a 37-year-old Albanian, who at the end of August 2023 was involved in an armed conflict where he was injured.

How did the group work:

Regarding their activity, members of the organization usually moved at night to different areas of Attica, searching for the targeted vehicles.

Once they identified the vehicles they were "targeting," they would get to work stealing them.

If they found a vehicle they were interested in and for some reason couldn't open it, they would leave, get the necessary equipment, and then come back.

Special technical equipment was used to open the vehicles, which are used by people with technical knowledge who professionally carry out vehicle thefts, such as plugs connected through the On Board Diagnostics port to the vehicle's electronic brain, vehicle keys, etc.

This is particularly valuable equipment, which is difficult to find in Greece and in most cases the perpetrators import it from abroad.

In addition to their specific knowledge of vehicle operation, they also had relevant experience in committing vehicle thefts.

They would then park the stolen vehicles in open spaces, to ensure that if they had a GPS tracker, their discovery would not lead authorities on their trail.

After noting the lack of a tracking system, they transported the vehicles to Albania where their collaborators in our country then registered them.

It should be noted that Albania is not a member country of the Schengen Area and therefore the state databases have no connection.

Thus, a vehicle that has been declared stolen in Greece can be freely registered in Albania.
