Death of 21-year-old Albanian in Italy, prosecution launches investigation into
Sonila Cani

Sonila Cani, a 21-year-old of Albanian origin, was found dead in March 2021 in an apartment on the outskirts of Turin, whose death is still a mystery.

Sonila's story, exploited by an Albanian group running a prostitution ring in the Piedmontese capital, came to light after the flying squad's operation, called Mariposa, which last week led to five precautionary measures for crimes ranging from robbery to inciting illegal immigration.

Sixteen people are under investigation. According to the Turin prosecutor's office, as reported by the newspaper La Stampa, the girl may have been pushed to commit suicide. The investigations are coordinated by prosecutor Valentina Sellaroli.

The operation that led to the dismantling of the network began in May 2022 with a robbery of an Albanian prostitute. The investigations uncovered a criminal system that involved young women forced into prostitution in specific areas of the city such as Barriera Nizza and Madonna di Campagna.

The victims, all of Albanian nationality, according to what has been reconstructed, have suffered continuous physical and psychological harassment. The women were forced to hand over all their income to their exploiters and were in conditions of total submission, also maintained through manipulative sentimental ties. Among them would be Sonila, found lifeless in the bathroom of a small apartment where she lived with her partner (now among those under investigation) and her two-year-old child.
