Gërdec tragedy, Mediu: I am innocent, 10 years have passed without any charges against me

The former Minister of Defense, Fatmir Mediu, claims that he is innocent, since according to the statute of limitations, for 10 years there has been no charge brought against him by justice.

At the end of today's session at the Special Court, Mediu also objected to the presence of witnesses, a large part of whom were employees at the ammunition dismantling factory in Gërdec.

Regarding a letter with the note "for Shkëlzen (Berisha), he said that he has no knowledge, since this fax arrived at the Ministry headed by him at that time, and Shkëlzen Berisha or Aldo Bumçi should be asked about this.

Excerpt from Mediu's statement:

For 10 years there has been no charge against me, moreover, since I have been here, I have not evaded justice, for someone who is presumed innocent, why should the statute of limitations not be assessed.

Witnesses who are relevant are ignored, and some people who worked in Gërdec are allowed. The USA, which made us members of NATO, is based on a special law. The Minister of Defense has never been notified that there is a problem with Gërdec. At no point was it contested orally.

There was no such letter from the Ministry of Defense, a decision came to the Ministry. This leads even further to ignorance in my relationship with Shkëlzen Berisha. They asked those who dealt with the fax, I was not aware. I was informed after the incident happened and they appeared in the media. This shows a lack of my relationship with Mr. Berisha regarding this matter.
