Epidemiologist Ilir Alimehmeti, speaking to the media about the flu situation in Albania, said that the flu vaccination program is far behind.

Alimehmeti pointed out that although it was assumed that 75 percent of vulnerable people would be covered by October, the vaccine is cleared in Albania at the end of October.

"We are in January, the winter period is classic for respiratory diseases. For two seasons we have had little or no circulation of viruses and it was expected that the coming year will be something more difficult. We saw Australia, we saw that it came more severely. This the situation also came to Albania. It should be taken into account that the vaccination program is also far behind. By October, it is assumed that 75 percent of vulnerable people will be covered. Meanwhile, in Albania, the vaccine is cleared by customs, introduced at the end of October. These viruses enter the family of the flu. This happens especially in children, who have not been immunized during these years", said Alimehmeti.

Alimehmeti says that flu hits children harder than Covid-19.

"It's not Covid, it's the flu. Fortunately, Covid didn't hit the children as hard as the flu. Fortunately, there was no loss of life. But this clinical setting with temperatures of 39-40, more fatigue... We have to take into account that the body increases the temperature to cope with the virus. If we look at the 380 cases in the hospital, I am convinced that ¾ were not for the hospital, but it is the concern of the parents. The number of doctors per inhabitant is small in Albania and where will they go, they will go to the hospital. This is treated as a virus, no antibiotics. Are there cases that can get worse? Of course there are, but the routine is that after 3-4 days the situation returns to normal. Sometimes even Covid-i the flu will go to the family", said the doctor.

The epidemiologist said that sensitization in this period is useless, as it should have been done in summer and autumn, but it did not happen properly.

"Sensitizing now is useless because we are in January. It should have happened in the summer and fall. At minimal levels it has happened. We also need to go through the media. The information should be continuous and should be done 10 times more. Since the summer of we saw Australia, we knew what would happen in our winter, we had time to prepare, but the preparation left something to be desired. The vaccines are presented at customs at the end of October, when the campaign is supposed to be over. 0-5 year olds are they suffer more because the flu hasn't gone away for three years. They've never had the flu before. We go into a cycle of panic-neglect. Every January is this story, we have to be concrete, constant, since come January-February, let's be prepared, emphasizes the doctor.

Asked about the measures to be taken against the flu, Alimehmeti says:

Official reports stopped in March 2020 when Covid appeared. We are talking about the figures that have been declared. 280,000 vaccines have entered Albania until December", emphasizes Alihmehmeti.
