Skënder Hita gives details of the murder of the police officer in Maliq: 40

The Director General of the State Police, Skënder Hita, and the Minister of Interior, Besfort Lamallari, gave a press conference this afternoon from Korça, providing the first details from the investigations conducted into the serious incident in Lozhan i Maliqi, where the suspect Violand Braçellari shot and killed officer Enea Mekolli during the action and wounded Edison Adrin, before being injured himself.

Hita explained that the Korça Police Directorate had itself evaluated the information about the much-wanted Braçellari and had not requested additional forces, while according to him, 40 forces, equipped with the necessary means, including bulletproof vests, participated in the action.

But he said that the "Kalashnikov" weapon used by the perpetrator unfortunately penetrated the bulletproof vest. The Chief of Police also confirmed the procedures for the evaluation with the title "Martyr of the Fatherland" for Officer Mekolli, while investigations for disciplinary proceedings are continuing, in parallel with that of the Prosecutor's Office.

"Several operations were organized by the Korça police, including special forces, but it was not possible to capture him. I have ordered the Directorate of Professional Standards to verify the work carried out by the Korça police and why operational support from the center was not requested. I convey my condolences to the family of officer Enea Mekollari. His act constitutes the highest act of a police officer. No event will ever bend the State Police," said Hita, among other things.

Asked by journalists about the operational plan, he explained that the officers are all trained:

"The operation was carried out by the Korça Police and the measures belong to them, if additional measures had been requested, these additional measures would definitely have been taken. The police officers are all treated and educated. Even in this case, there were specialized services that are the Eagles but also other services that the directorate has, these were the structures in the operation.

There were 40 police forces in the operation, all protective conditions, with bulletproof vests, but the weapon used by the perpetrator was a Kalashnikov, which broke the bulletproof vest. The information was available to the Korça directorate itself, which evaluated and made the operational plan itself.

Hita further answered the question about the measures taken by the General Directorate regarding the case and the procedures for declaring Enea Mekolli a martyr.

"The disciplinary investigation has begun, as well as those of the prosecution, and further decisions will be made. We are following the procedures for the status of the police martyr, because he is now a police martyr, so to follow all the procedures to find his family members close to him," concluded Hita.

The police chief also explained that he had no knowledge of the action:

"An exemplary police officer was killed and another was injured in the gun attack. I have ordered the Standards Directorate to investigate the procedure and why the Korça Directorate did not request assistance from RENEA. I was not aware of the operation."

When asked by journalists about other dangerous wanted persons in the southeast, he warned and assured that "they will receive a strong response from the State Police."

Meanwhile, Minister Lamallari expressed his condolences to the family of the police officer who died in the line of duty, adding that the institution and the state are in support of them, as well as the injured police officer, Edison Adri.

"I offer my condolences to the family and colleagues in these difficult moments. I visited the injured colleague. We are with the family to express our support," he said, among other things.
