"How does God allow massacres?"/ Archbishop Joani answers Rama's
Archbishop of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania, Joan Pelushi

The Archbishop of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania, Joan Pelushi, is the guest of the next episode of Prime Minister Edi Rama's podcast.

Rama: There are people who say how God allows the most horrific massacres to happen, how God allows ethnic cleansing, how God allows a parent to lose a child, and so on. How does a man of God respond to that?

Archbishop Joan: In the religious sense, it is seen in an even deeper form. Evil in Christian theology is not seen as having substance, it is seen as a deformation of good. Evil does not exist, it is good that has been deformed. The deformation of good came as a result of people's free will. We live in time and space, it seems very long to us, for God. In God there is neither past nor future. It is a general present. What may seem like an infinite time to us, may be short. Evil comes from the deformation that man made. Therefore, to be good in the Christian sense, it is not in the ethical plan, it is in the ontological plan of our being. By not being good, it is we who diminish as people, ethics is very important because our being also depends on this. God did not bring death, it was we who broke away from life. I cannot speak about specific cases to say why it happens to this person. All of this is a recovery process, it is undoubtedly painful, and the explanation is according to the level of trust of people. You can't tell a parent that the loss of a child is for their own good. Sometimes the wisest answer is to say I don't know. It is a process that has to happen within them. In moments of calm, you can explain even more.
