Deported Albanians return to Britain

Thousands of foreign migrants who were deported from the United Kingdom have been recaptured in Britain years later, an investigation by The Sun newspaper has revealed .

The data shows that there have been 4,614 re-entry cases of people who were previously deported over the past 5 years. According to the figures, at least 723 migrants left on two or more occasions.

Albanians made up more than a third of all re-entry cases, with 1,525 individuals found back in Britain after being forced to leave. They are followed by Romanians (767), Afghans (281), Lithuanians (233) and Iraqis (150).

In 2025, there were 26,388 voluntary returns and 8,590 forced returns. For each forced deportation, the British state pays an average of £48,800. These figures have raised questions about the effectiveness of the UK's costly deportation system.

Since Keir Starmer became prime minister in July 2024, over 76,000 illegal migrants have crossed the Channel. This is despite the Labour government's landmark "one in, one out" deal with France, which was intended to discourage them from making the dangerous journey.

Starmer's chaotic returns policy was undermined from the start after lawyers made urgent applications to the High Court to prevent the deportation of asylum seekers.

In September 2025, The Sun revealed that two deportation flights took off without migrants on board.

As of June 15, 2026, only 921 migrants had been returned to France under the "one in, one out" agreement since its inception in August 2025.

Between June 15 and 22, 1,912 illegal migrants arrived in Britain in small boats.

Despite weak attempts by French authorities to stop the ships, Starmer agreed to give Paris another £662 million for the poor service.
