German report: 40 Albanian gangs operate in the country, billions of profits

In the German government's annual report on organized crime 2021, Albanian groups are not missing: 40 from Albania and 20 from Kosovo

The economic damage caused by organized crime (OC) in Germany in 2021 was twice as high as the year before. From 873 million euros in 2020, it increased to 2.2 billion euros in 2021. This comes from the Federal Situation Report on Organized Crime 2021, which was published on Wednesday, 21.09.2022, in Berlin by the Federal Ministry of Interior and Federal Criminal Police Office. The income of criminals in 2021 was 1.4 billion euros. Most of them come from the drug trade.

According to the report, the number of investigations in the organized crime sector has also increased, from 600 to 700. This increase is related to the decryption of encrypted communication platforms, especially EncroChat. As the current report shows, more than a quarter of all investigations launched in the field of organized crime (187 investigations, 26.9 percent) can be traced to data provided by the EncroChat communication service,

The Minister of the Interior, Nancy Faeser, said that "the pressure on organized crime in Germany is higher than ever before". She said that she has made the fight against organized crime the focus of her work: Unlike the acts of extremists or terrorists, organized crime is generally not very visible. This is precisely why we should not underestimate how great the stakes are here. We see some very professional structures that operate in a conspiratorial and internationally networked manner," said Faeser.

BKA President Holger Münch said that as a result of the information gained from encrypted platforms, we have now been able to create a clearer idea of organized crime in Germany. But we are aware that "this is only the tip of the iceberg", Muench said.

According to the report, KO groups are becoming increasingly willing to use sometimes drastic violence. What effect organized crime can have on internal security can be seen in Germany's neighboring countries, such as the Netherlands and Sweden, where organized crime has taken on disturbing proportions for public peace.

The Albanians are third again

Thanks to the decryption of encrypted platforms, the number of Albanians organized in criminal gangs, who have been under investigation for participating in criminal organizations, has also increased. As in previous years, the BKA report has reserved a page for the organized crime of Albanians, from which it follows that in 2021 in Germany, around 40 gangs led by Albanians were under investigation, the vast majority of which (36 ) is involved in the trafficking of narcotics. In the other four cases, the gangs were involved in tax crimes, illegal human trafficking, money laundering and economic crime.

This figure ranks the Albanians third again after the Germans (261) and the Turks (90) in terms of the number of groups dominated by an ethnic group. In sixth place are the Kosovars, with 20 criminal gangs, after the Russians and the Poles. At the bottom of the ten most prominent nationalities are the Serbs with 14 gangs.

BKA calls ethnically dominated groups those groups that are led by a group of people of a particular ethnicity, even though many associates may not belong to the same nationality. The BKA takes the place of birth as the basis for determining nationality, Münch said. /DW
