South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law in a televised address to his nation, in which he accused the opposition of anti-state activities.

Suk Yeol accused the country's opposition of controlling parliament, sympathizing with North Korea and paralyzing the government with anti-state activities.

Yoon made the announcement during a televised conference, vowing to "root out pro-Korean forces and protect the constitutional democratic order."

Yoon, who has suffered a decline in popularity in recent months, has struggled to push his agenda against an opposition-controlled parliament since taking office in 2022.

Yoon's conservative People Power Party was locked in a stalemate with the liberal opposition Democratic Party over next year's budget bill. He has also rejected calls for independent investigations into scandals involving women and senior officials, facing sharp and strong criticism from his political rivals.
