The storm hits the island of Rhodes

A state of emergency has been declared on two Greek islands after storms left three people dead and caused extensive damage.

More than 30 cm of rain fell in Rhodes, one of the first places to be hit by Storm Bora, which arrived in Greece on Saturday.

Two men died in a flooded village in Lemnos, north of the Aegean Sea.

Rescue teams on the islands, aided by the military and local authorities, rescued many elderly residents in flood-hit areas after winds of up to 129 km/h and torrential rain over the weekend overturned cars, caused power outages and damaged the streets.

Among the hardest hit areas was the popular Rhodes resort of Faliraki, where flooding caused by torrential rains destroyed a bridge, caused a chasm to open in the ground and damaged homes and shops on the coast.
