Chancellor Scholz suddenly in Kiev: We will be with Ukraine until the end

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced new military aid to Ukraine during a rare visit to Kiev, also delivering a direct message to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

This is Scholz's first visit to Kiev since the first months of Russia's invasion in 2022. It comes ahead of Donald Trump's return to the White House and weeks after Scholz's governing coalition in Berlin collapsed, threatening the future of him as chancellor.

"My very clear message from Kiev to Russian President Vladimir Putin: We are in this battle for a long time, and we will stand by Ukraine as long as it takes," Scholz said.

Scholz used the meeting with Zelenskyy to announce further equipment shipments worth 650 million euros to be delivered this month. The package includes IRIS-T air defense systems, Leopard 1 tanks and armed drones.

"This December, a sixth IRIS-T SLM system and further Patriot launchers, as well as more Gerard anti-aircraft tanks. Also in 2025, we will supply other air defense systems, howitzers, attack and reconnaissance drones , artillery ammunition, as well as six Sea King attack helicopters, just to name a few of those to come," added the chancellor.

While trumpeting Germany as Ukraine's second-largest arms supplier after the United States, Scholz has repeatedly refused to send Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine, fearing it could draw his country into direct conflict with Russia.

Zelensky, for his part, said that Ukraine needed more air defense to protect "special" places in Ukraine.

Political upheaval in Germany, Europe's largest economy, adds to a growing sense of insecurity in Ukraine, with Russian troops advancing ever faster in the east. It is unclear how much Kiev's European partners might increase support for Ukraine if Trump cuts aid from the United States, its most powerful ally.
