Italian authorities have published footage of the operation where the assets of brothers Suel and Mario Çela, worth around 4 million euros, were seized.

Italian media report that it is about money laundering in Italy, proceeds from international drug trafficking by the Albanian mafia.

The operation in Verona was carried out by Italian authorities in cooperation with the Special Prosecutor's Office against Corruption and Organized Crime.

This marks the first time that SPAK has seized assets of organized crime outside the territory of Albania. But also for the Italian authorities it is the first time that an Albanian criminal organization has invested in real estate on the territory of a European Union country, in this case, Italy.

SPAK announced that the Court of Verona decided as a preventive measure the seizure of certain movable and immovable assets, financial resources and shares of the assets of a commercial company.

More specifically, the following were seized:

- A building, real estate in Nogarole Roça (Verona)

- A building, worth around 3 million euros, consisting of 30 units (offices and shops) (Verona)

- A bank account where office and store rents were deposited (around 400 thousand euros per year)

- A trading company operating in the construction field, with 100% quota in Italy.

Investigations show that these assets were created and financed with profits from international drug trafficking from South America to European markets.

Money laundering scheme

The attention of Albanian and Italian law enforcement authorities focused on a real estate company in Italy. Large sums of money were being sent to it through the banking system.

But that money came from Albania, as the criminal organization transferred the proceeds from a trading company in Albania, owned by Suel and Mario Çela. Those amounts were invested in Italy in construction, reconstruction of buildings and then rented out.

The authorities have concluded that the use of large financial resources flowing from Albania into the Italian economy "also represented the final link in money laundering."

Suspicious real estate transactions were carried out in Albania, with the aim of preventing the traceability of the illicit origin of the money. In this way, the organization benefited from “laundered” services, with the profit obtained from the suspicious transactions, which could be reused in real estate investments, in Italian territory.

"Also, real estate and financial resources belonging to the administrator of a real estate company in Verona, owned by an Albanian couple, involved in the past in drug trafficking, have been seized," SPAK announced.

They were considered the trusted men of the two Çela brothers and turned out to be on the criminal organization's payroll.

"Checks have also been carried out on the main subjects and their Italian assistants, with the aim of finding further evidence," SPAK announced.

Suel Çela, on the run. His brother, in prison in Belgium

Suel Çela is considered the head of a criminal organization in Elbasan. He is wanted after investigations by SPAK. On the other hand, Mario Çela is arrested in Belgium.

He was arrested in Verona in June 2024, following the execution of an arrest warrant issued by Belgian authorities on suspicion of involvement in a mafia murder in Antwerp, as a result of conflicts between rival drug trafficking groups.

SPAK accuses Suel Çela of ordering two assassinations, details that were revealed in the "Golden Bullet" file.

Also, through the analysis of the Sky ECC application, it turned out that Suel Çela had connections with people in the justice and police sectors, such as former judge Pajtime Fetahu or officer Dedan Gjoni.

He influenced the easing of security measures for members of the criminal group he led. Çela is also accused of leading a cocaine trafficking group from Latin American countries to the European Union.
