One of the most used messaging apps in the world, WhatsApp , is going through a new phase that is expected to affect millions of users.

With the latest update, the platform has introduced monthly fees for some advanced features and has begun testing ads in certain sections of the application.

This is an important step towards deeper monetization of the service, while the company promises to maintain the privacy of conversations.

WhatsApp has announced major changes to the Channels and Status feature (under the “Updates” section).

For the first time, channel owners can set a monthly fee for exclusive content.

Also, businesses can pay to promote their channels and increase visibility in the list.

In addition, the app will start showing ads in the "Status" section, targeted to users based on limited data such as location, language, the channels you follow, and your activities with ads.

WhatsApp promises that personal conversations, calls, and statuses remain end-to-end encrypted, and ads are not placed in your messaging space.

What will change in WhatsApp?

Paid Channels: The owner of a WhatsApp Channel can now charge a monthly fee for exclusive content, which is used by millions of users.

Promoted Channels: Businesses can pay to increase their channel's visibility in the Channels list.

Ads in Status (Updates tab): WhatsApp will display ads in the "Updates/Status" section, targeted in a limited way based on location, language, channels followed, and past interactions.

Privacy violated?

No: Personal chats, calls, and statuses remain encrypted, and ads do not appear in private conversations.

These changes will be gradually available over the coming months to all users globally.
