A high-security inmate passed away in the early hours of this morning at the "Mother Teresa" University Hospital Center (QSUT).

According to the official announcement, Mihal Pavllo Mërkuri, who was admitted to the Central Resuscitation Unit, in the Surgery Pavilion, passed away at around 04:35. Death occurred as a result of cardiac arrest and hemorrhage in the head.

Merkuri, born on January 25, 1979, born and residing in Saranda, was serving a 10-year prison sentence for the criminal offenses of "attempted intentional murder" and "unauthorized production and possession of weapons and ammunition," writes VoxNews.

He was extradited from Greece to Albania on June 20, 2023, after a long period of international search, and on February 15, 2025, he was transferred to the Burrel Prison from the Korça Prison.

According to official data, Merkur was admitted to the QSUT on January 18, 2026, at around 8:21 p.m., and underwent surgery due to internal hemorrhage (hemoperitoneum). Despite medical assistance, he was unable to survive.

The name of Mihal Mërkuri is well-known to Albanian and Greek justice. He was declared an international wanted man for more than 11 years, after in November 2006 he had wounded businessman Vendim Bejko with a gun in Saranda. For this incident he was sentenced in absentia to 10 years in prison.

In 2017, Mërkuri was arrested in Greece after Greek police cracked down on a drug trafficking case in the Vasilikos area, near Igoumenitsa. He was arrested along with Panayot Demaj, while they were suspected of driving a vehicle that was used to control the route of a van loaded with 214 kilograms of marijuana. Two other Albanian citizens, who were in the van, managed to escape when Greek police intervened.

Authorities indicate that all established legal procedures are being implemented for Merkur's death, while the competent authorities are expected to carry out the relevant verifications according to protocol.
