Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned today that Israeli attacks on Iran risk causing a wave of migration to Europe, during a phone call he had with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

"Our president stated that the impact of this escalation of violence caused by Israeli attacks could harm the region and Europe in terms of migration," a statement from the Turkish presidency said.

Turkey, which shares a 500-kilometer border with Iran, has not recorded an increase in arrivals from Iran over the past week.

"The conflict that began with Israel's attack on Iran is a major threat to regional security," Erdogan added during his conversation with Merz, calling for a return to the negotiating table.

The migration issue strained relations between the European Union and Ankara, which was accused of encouraging Syrian refugees seeking refuge on its territory to continue on to Europe.

A 2016 agreement between the EU and Turkey stipulated that Ankara would keep a large number of Syrian refugees on its territory.
