When will the heat wave in Europe end? Forecasting an exact date and the storms

The extreme heat that has affected many southern and eastern countries this month has been caused in part by a wave of hot air from North Africa.

Many people are reported to have lost their lives in Italy and warnings of alarming situations have also been issued for countries from Portugal to Romania and Cyprus.

But the deadly heat is finally expected to subside in many places over the weekend and next week.

Southern and eastern areas of Europe have been under what we call a high pressure spectrum, basically a large area of high pressure with a lot of very warm air that doesn't move much.

In contrast, low pressure areas with cooler and more variable conditions have dominated closer to the Atlantic. Northern Europe is spared the scorching heat due to a fast-moving upper-atmosphere jet stream that separates these two weather regimes.

Where the two air masses meet - from southern France and the Alps to the Baltic states - there has been heavy rain and strong storms with large hail and strong winds.

Temperatures have been around 6-12 degrees Celsius above average values for the time of year, fueling fires and requiring record energy consumption. Some areas have adopted special plans, including opening air-conditioned spaces and banning outdoor work to protect people.

But the good news is that the worst is now behind us, with the trend for Sunday and next week showing a gradual decline towards more seasonal conditions.

Despite the end of the heat wave, temperatures are set to remain high for the rest of the month. Temperatures in the low 30s are forecast for many places in southern Europe until July 25.

But predicting heat waves – especially their intensity and duration – remains a challenge and experts are not sure what will happen in the rest of the summer.
