Prime Minister Edi Rama continues to post about the trial of former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army in The Hague.
This time, he has shared the speech in court of the lawyer of the former president of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi. Rama declares that this is how one should speak in the face of international idiocy.
Thaçi's lawyer, in his speech in The Hague, states that the Prosecution does not even mention the fact that the former president of Kosovo, without the burden of proof, is still innocent, thus eliminating the presumption of innocence.
“ Hashim Thaçi is innocent. That is your starting position as you begin the proceedings. We know he is innocent at this point in the proceedings because the law requires you to assume he is innocent. Believe it or not, I have heard presidents of international criminal courts give speeches where they get this wrong. They say that a finding of innocence does not mean that we have said they were innocent. This kind of thinking is at play throughout the process of international trials.
Before you are four men who, by law, should be presumed innocent. These proceedings were instituted because the Office of the Specialist Prosecutor has come forward and claimed that they have evidence that proves beyond a reasonable doubt that they are guilty. And so for more than five years now we have been engaged in a process designed to test the Office of the Specialist Prosecutor that they can prove their charges. This trial is not a review of Hashim Thaçi’s life, it is a test of the SPO’s claim that Hashim Thaçi should no longer enjoy the presumption of innocence. When you begin your proceedings, you will start from the position that Hashim Thaçi is innocent. Then you will assess whether the evidence presented by the Prosecution has convinced you beyond a reasonable doubt that Thaçi is guilty. "If the Special Prosecution has not convinced you, if you conclude that there is a reasonable explanation of the evidence other than Hashim Thaçi is guilty of the charges, then you must find that the Special Prosecution has failed and issue a decision of acquittal. Hashim Thaçi will remain innocent under the law. We submit that in your deliberations you will conclude that the Special Prosecution cannot meet the burden of proof ," said Thaçi's lawyer.
Prime Minister Rama has several times defended Hashim Thaçi and other former KLA leaders, stating that the internationals are completely wrong in their reasoning.
