A woman of Albanian origin has been arrested for bigamy in Italy, after it emerged that she was married to two men, one in 2004 and the other recently. Investigations conducted by Italian police revealed the incident.

The investigation reportedly began after the Albanian woman applied for a residence permit for family reasons. She had recently married a man who lived in Montecatini Terme. However, during the investigation it emerged that she had also been married to an Italian citizen since 2004.

After this discovery, the permit was suspended and the woman was arrested for committing the crime of bigamy.

Bigamy is recognized as a crime under Article 556 of the Italian Penal Code, reports the Italian newspaper Il Messaggero.

According to the law, "Anyone who, while in a civil marriage, enters into another marriage, albeit with civil effects, shall be punished by one to five years of imprisonment. The same punishment shall apply to anyone who, while unmarried, marries a person in a civil marriage."

The punishment is increased if the perpetrator of the criminal offense has deceived the person to whom he or she was married regarding his or her freedom of status. If the marriage previously contracted by the bigamist is declared invalid, or the second marriage is annulled for reasons other than bigamy, the crime is extinguished, also in relation to those who participated in the crime, and, if there was a sentence, its execution and the penal effects cease."
