A court in Oldenburg, Germany, opened the trial of six people on Monday, including two Albanians, two Romanians and two Colombians, accused of international drug trafficking and illegal entry into Germany, according to Bild. According to the indictment, the group planned an operation to remove 184 kilograms of cocaine from the bottom of a Brazilian ship, the “Tiger South,” which docked in the port of Brake in March of this year.

They met in February in Spain and Portugal to carry out the plan. To carry out the extraction of drugs from a part of the ship's hull, the defendants used sophisticated diving equipment commonly used by the military and police, including rebreathers (devices that hide breathing bubbles), underwater scooters and advanced diving suits. Three of the defendants, one of whom is Albanian, professional divers, were tasked with dismantling the ship's marine box screws to extract six packages of cocaine, worth up to 18 million euros.

The plan failed when, during the dive in the Unterweser River, an alarm on the boat forced them to retreat. Police were waiting on shore, who, according to Bild, had received information from international partners and had been following the group for weeks. The six were arrested on the spot, and the drugs were later seized by the authorities.

If the defendants – Romeo-Paul U. (65 years old), Dan L. (38 years old), Amando B. (41 years old), Ionel D. (39 years old), Roberto E. (53 years old) and Oscar M. (38 years old), plead guilty, they risk sentences of 4 to 7 years in prison.

A drug cartel hired an international team of specialists to extract hidden drugs: According to the indictment, professional divers were supposed to extract 184 kilograms of cocaine from the hull of a cargo ship. But the experts were betrayed – arrested and detained.

As of Monday, six men are due to appear before the Oldenburg State Court on charges including drug trafficking in a structured group and illegal import of narcotics.

Divers used military equipment

The indictment reads like an excerpt from an espionage thriller. According to it, in February, the defendants – two Romanians (39 and 65 years old), two Albanians (38 and 41 years old) and two Colombians (39 and 53 years old) – met secretly in Spain and Portugal. Their task: Three of them were to remove six packages of drugs (black market value: up to 18 million euros) from the hull of the Brazilian ship “Tiger South”, which was expected to arrive in the port of Brake (Lower Saxony) at the beginning of March.

For this dangerous underwater mission in the Unterweser River, they procure professional diving equipment: diving suits, underwater scooters and closed-circuit breathing apparatuses (known as rebreathers, which allow diving without bubbles), as well as lighting equipment. “A very professional piece of equipment, usually only used by the military and the police,” the prosecutor said. Three of the defendants were involved in logistics – arranging rental cars and holiday homes, including one in the artistic village of Worpswede.

Divers forced to stop drug extraction

On the night between March 2 and 3, the moment of action comes: According to the indictment, the two Colombians and one of the Albanians dive towards the ship “Tiger South.” With diving knives, they try to unscrew the sea box to reach the cocaine hidden in a cavity in the ship’s hull.

But due to a sudden alarm on the ship, the divers are forced to stop the action and swim to the shore. The police are already waiting for them there. Investigators from the Joint Drug Investigation Unit (GER), consisting of the LKA (Land Criminal Police) and Customs, arrest the divers and their accomplices who were waiting for them on land.

According to BILD, German authorities had previously received a tip-off from partner services abroad and had been tracking the group for some time. The packages of drugs (at that time still gross weight) were later seized by the police.

They risk long prison sentences.

After the indictment was read, the court, prosecution and defense withdrew for a closed-door legal discussion. The court has predicted sentences of four to seven years in prison for the defendants Romeo-Paul U. (65), Dan L. (38), Amando B. (41), Ionel D. (39), Roberto E. (53) and Oscar M. (38) – if they plead guilty.
