The music world is in mourning as Bonnie Tyler passes away at the age of 75

The music world lost one of the most unique voices in pop history.

Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler has died at the age of 75, a few weeks after undergoing emergency surgery and remaining in an induced coma.

The news was confirmed by her family in a statement published on the artist's official website. According to the announcement, Tyler passed away in a hospital in Portugal after an illness for which he was receiving treatment.

"Bonnie's family and team are devastated to announce that Bonnie passed away unexpectedly last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness she was being treated for. We ask for privacy to cope with this tragedy."

The singer, whose real name was Gaynor Hopkins, was born in Mumbles, South Wales, and became famous worldwide thanks to her characteristic, husky, and emotional voice.

In April, after arriving in Portugal, where she also had a second home, Tyler suffered severe abdominal pain. After examinations, it was discovered that she had a ruptured intestine and she immediately underwent emergency surgery.

After several days in Faro hospital, she was placed in an induced coma and then transferred to the intensive care unit. Tyler woke up from the coma on June 15, but it was later reported that she had suffered a serious infection following the procedure.

Bonnie Tyler first gained fame in 1977 with the album "The World Starts Tonight", but her global success came in 1983 with the immortal hit "Total Eclipse Of The Heart".

The song became one of the most popular ballads of the 1980s and made Tyler an international star. She also had major hits with the songs "It's A Heartache" and "Holding Out For A Hero."

During her career spanning over five decades, she was nominated three times for a Grammy Award and in 2023 was awarded the MBE title for her contribution to music.

In 2013, Tyler represented the United Kingdom in the Eurovision Song Contest, where he competed with the song "Believe In Me" and finished in 19th place.

In 2021, she released her 18th studio album, "The Best Is Yet To Come".

In an interview in 2021, the singer spoke about aging and said she had no intention of leaving the stage.

"I'll never back down. I watch Tom Jones. He's incredible. His voice is as strong as ever."

Bonnie Tyler had been married since 1973 to property developer Robert Sullivan.

Her death marks the loss of one of British music's most distinguished artists, a voice that has accompanied millions of listeners around the world for decades.
