"50 Albanian criminals will return to their homeland", British media:

The British media, Daily Mail, reports that 50 Albanian criminals who are currently in the prisons of the United Kingdom will be sent home to serve their full sentence as "a gesture of goodwill for the New Year by the government of Tirana". It is reported that these prisoners have volunteered to be transferred from British prisons to Albanian ones as part of a new agreement. The first 10 convicts are expected to be deported on a charter plane during the first weeks of January, the  Daily Mail reveals .

"It is a "first step" by the two nations towards a routine movement of hundreds of Albanian prisoners, saving millions of pounds of British taxpayers' money and creating space in overcrowded prisons," writes the Daily Mail.

According to the British media, all prisoners who will be sent home will serve the full sentence that has been decided by the judges in the United Kingdom. Until now, deportations from the Home Office to Tirana included criminals who had completed their sentences in Britain or had crossed the English Channel illegally.

"An Albanian government source said yesterday that intensive talks between the British Minister of Justice and the Albanian Minister Ulsi Manja have led to an agreement on the first transfers to prisons", writes the Daily Mail.

"We have limited capacities in our prisons. But to show that we are ready to fulfill our obligations to Great Britain, we have agreed to host 50 Albanians who have expressed their willingness to return," added the source according to the Daily Mail.

The British media writes that Albanians represent 10% of foreigners held in prisons in England and Wales. Although the first group of deportees have agreed to return, the Albania-UK agreement states that prisoners can be transferred in the future even without their consent. Court decisions for those who will be sent home have been sent to Tirana because the agreement states that Albania must obtain assurances that their punishment fits the crime before the green light for travel is given.

Daily Mail writes that in the future, according to this agreement, some Albanians serving sentences for murder or drug trafficking will be forced to return to Albania. As a case, Daily Mail takes Koçi Selamaj. The 37-year-old killed Sabina Nessa in September 2021 while she was walking in a park in London. For this crime he was sentenced to 36 years in prison.

Another murderer serving time in British prisons is Ali Qazimaj, 48. He killed a 75-year-old man named Peter Stuart, while the latter's wife was never found.

According to the Daily Mail, drug lords such as Valjet Pepaj, 32 years old, sentenced to 27 years in prison, Erald Mema, 37 years old, sentenced to 25 years in prison, and Sami Qerkini, 57 years old, sentenced to 20 years in prison, are also in British prisons.

According to the media, 1,336 Albanians are serving sentences for various crimes in British prisons. The United Kingdom and Albania reached an initial agreement to deport Albanian lawbreakers in July 2021. The Albanian parliament ratified the agreement two months later, but according to the Daily Mail, red tape hampered its effectiveness.

"This fresh deal builds on the 2021 deal," a source told the Daily Mail. He explained that prison deportations will be fast-tracked thanks to a new pledge from the UK to share court records. The Ministry of Justice of Tirana will receive information on the sentencing decisions of Albanian criminals and the details of the offenses for which they were found guilty.

"It has suddenly accelerated the process", the source of the Albanian government told the Daily Mail.

We recall that earlier this month, Prime Ministers Edi Rama and Rishi Sunak reached an agreement to fight illegal immigration to Great Britain
