For four months, the 22-year-old Kenyan Joyce Achieng Aoko has been admitted to the Trauma hospital where she was admitted on August 14, 2022 after she was found unconscious, with visible signs of violence, under the balcony of the room where she lived in the Flowers residence in Tirana.
Referring to the data provided by the forensic report, it turns out that the young woman was raped. The 22-year-old had suffered numerous injuries, with broken ribs and bones, hand and stomach injuries and brain damage.
From the emergency department of the "Mother Teresa" hospital, she was transferred intubated to the Trauma hospital in a serious state of health 30 hours after she disappeared. For several weeks she remained in a coma in one of the hospital rooms.
It is learned that the young woman from Kenya has passed the state of coma, she survived, but suffered a brain injury, leaving her in a vegetative state.
The vegetative state is often described as "waking up without consciousness". The patient in this condition opens her eyes and seems to be awake. So it often has cycles of sleep and wakefulness, although it does not respond to any form of stimulation or external stimulation.
Patients in these cases can recover basic body functions, such as being able to breathe without assistance and control blood pressure. However, people in the vegetative state have lost substantial brain functions and are not aware of their surroundings.
"Coma can be reversible when it can be returned and irreversible when it is not returned, in this case it is vegetative where the brain does not work and only the heart works, but cognitive functions have been lost. The patient can feed, live but does not recognize, does not communicate, this is vegetative coma. For details about your case, you should communicate with the responsible doctor who follows the patient", said the anesthesiologist and resuscitator, Agron Xheta.
How much hope for a full recovery does Joyce have? Will her life be the same again?
The doctors who followed the patient's case refused to comment as the matter is being investigated by the Prosecutor's Office. But what we can say is that her life will not be the same until the morning of August 14.
Neuroscientist Dr Adrian Owen, according to sciencefocus, says that patients in a vegetative state are standing in the undefined space between life and death. For decades, it was assumed that such patients have no awareness of the world around them, including who they are, where they are, and their predicament. But Dr Adrian Owen also says that he has proven the opposite. A person in a persistent vegetative state is able to breathe without assistance. When awake it can react to physical pain and can move.
Question: Is the security provided by the hospital sufficient for every ordinary patient? In your opinion, are there sufficient indications that the citizen in question may be at risk of life in the hospital, and should there be extra protection for her in this case?
Beçi: As I said, the evidence is evaluated case by case, but the legal basis is the law on the protection of witnesses and associates of justice, which defines the procedures and the level of protection. In this particular case, it is not only about a patient, but about a person who may be a witness to a crime as it is and damaged by the crime that happened./ Gazeta Ekpres
