Shortly before the second match against the Czech Republic, Adams had received the devastating news of the death of his 72-year-old grandmother, with whom he had a strong bond. The South African Football Association said the player had played despite great emotional pain, "carrying a weight inside him".

After the match, he also gave the usual interviews to the media, while his teammates approached him to support him with hugs and pats on the shoulder.

His death has raised many questions. Some media outlets in South Africa have cast doubt on a possible suicide, linking it to a depressive state that, according to people close to him, may have been hidden.

Adams' partner said that after his grandmother's death he had struggled with eating and had struggled with depression. According to her, even during communications during the World Cup, he "didn't seem the same."

However, other sources in South Africa report that it may not have been a suicide. According to these versions, Adams had presented to the hospital with symptoms of food poisoning and it is suspected that the condition may have been underestimated or incorrectly treated.

South African Sports Minister McKenzie reacted with grief to the news:

Adams was one of South Africa's revelations at this World Cup, where the national team was returning after a 16-year absence. He played as an attacking midfielder and had just begun to attract the attention of federation leaders for his future.

Beyond his sports career, he was the father of a 5-year-old daughter.

But the latest tragedy wasn't the first major heartbreak in his life. In 2023, Adams lost his best friend, Oshwin Andries, the 19-year-old captain of the U-20 national team.

Andries was killed after a fight in a bar, where a person stabbed him after a misunderstanding. Although he was initially released from the hospital and returned to training, he died a few days later on the way back to the hospital.
