There are less than seven days left until the start of the 2026 World Cup and, after the publication of the lists of the 48 participating national teams, the official photos with which the teams present their participation are also being published on social networks. Among them, one has particularly attracted the public's attention: that of Norway, which has decided to celebrate its return to a World Cup after an absence of 28 years.

Beyond the fact that it was Norway that eliminated Italy for the third time in a row from a World Cup, the Scandinavian national team decided to honor its history and identity in an original and already viral way: all the footballers posed dressed as Vikings. The photo quickly spread on social networks. At first, many people suspected that it was created with artificial intelligence, but it was later confirmed that it was a real photo shoot, organized down to the smallest detail to celebrate Norway's historic return to the World Cup.

The photo shoot took place in secret at the end of May 2026. The team gathered on a beach in the Oslofjord, shortly before the start of the World Cup training camp and departure for the United States. The initiative was conceived by the Norwegian Football Association, which aimed to break the mold of traditional team photos and highlight national pride and Viking heritage. The team's star player, Erling Haaland, also played an important role, helping to contact the famous British photographer David Yarrow.

Yarrow is a well-known name in international photography and has previously collaborated with Haaland. In 2023, he photographed the Norwegian striker in a fjord, dressed as a Viking, as part of a charity initiative. After the success of that project, the photographer agreed to expand the idea to the entire national team.

No use of artificial intelligence

In the center of the photo is Haaland himself, with long hair flowing and a sword in his hand. Around him are other members of the team, including Alexander Sorloth, who is said to have received personal compliments from Yarrow. No green screen or massive digital effects were used to create the photo. Everything was actually built on location.

Authentic replicas of Viking ships were brought to the area and a wooden pier was built to accommodate the group's posing. The players wore carefully crafted historical costumes, with leather armor, furs, swords, and real shields. Everything was based on historical research and authentic reconstructions, so much so that the organizers consciously avoided horned helmets, as they are considered historically inaccurate and the result of modern stereotypes.

The only digital trick: Odegaard was added later

The only digital intervention Yarrow was forced to use was for Norway captain Martin Odegaard. Due to commitments with his club Arsenal, who were involved in the Champions League final and the Premier League title race, he was unable to physically attend the beach photo shoot. Odegaard was later photographed in the same suit and then digitally added to the center of the group, completing the official Norwegian national team photo.
