Imane Khelif, the Algerian boxer at the center of controversy after her match with Italian Angela Carini at the Olympic Games, has spoken for the first time about the attacks on her.

In an Arabic-language interview with SNTV, she issued a strong warning to her critics, asking them not to bully her.

"I send a message to all the people of the world to respect the Olympic principles and the Olympic Charter, to refrain from bullying all athletes, because this has effects, massive effects. It can destroy people, it can kill people's thoughts, soul and mind. It can divide people. And because of that, I ask them to refrain from bullying. "Comments about my gender are harmful to human dignity," she said.

The 25-year-old Khelif accepted the pressure and pain of the ordeal as she competed away from home in the most important event of her athletic career.

"I am in contact with my family two days a week. I hope they are not affected. They are worried about me. God willing, this crisis will culminate with a gold medal and that would be the best answer," she said.

The controversy erupted following claims by the International Boxing Association, which said Khelif had been banned a year ago from the women's boxing championship after failing unspecified eligibility tests for the women's competition at last year's world championships.

Khelif declined to answer when asked if she had undergone tests other than the doping tests, saying she did not want to talk about it.

She expressed gratitude to the International Olympic Committee and its president, Thomas Bach, for standing firmly behind her.

Khelif began her Olympic run last Thursday with a win over Italy's Angela Carini, who retired after just 46 seconds. Tsarini later said she regretted her decision and wanted to apologize to Khelifi.
