Spanish police say four people have been arrested on Tuesday for racist chants directed at Brazilian soccer player Vinicius during a match played between Valencia and Real Madrid last weekend.

The arrests in Valencia come a day after the head of the football federation, Luis Rubiales, said that Spanish football has a racism problem, and after a complaint of racial crimes filed by Real Madrid.

After he was taunted during a Spanish league match on Sunday, Vinicius Jr, in a social media post, called the racist abuse "inhuman" and called on sponsors and broadcasters to hold La Liga accountable.

Earlier in the day, police said four men were arrested in Madrid, three of whom were members of "a radical group of fans of a Madrid club" who are suspected of hanging a Vinicius Jr. doll from a bridge in beginning of this year.

The striker has received the support of Real Madrid, while the daughter of soccer star Pele, Kelly Cristina Nascimiento, expressed anger at the incident at the "Mestalla" stadium in Valencia.

In a video posted on Instagram, Pele's daughter said Spain, La Liga and Real Madrid "should be ashamed" of the events that took place during Sunday's match.

She called on football's governing bodies to unite and take effective and tough measures against racist attacks on footballers.

Even the minister for racial equality in Brazil, Aniel Franco, expressed support for the Los Blancos player and added that it is unacceptable to still talk about racism in 2023.
