Sali Berisha has reacted after US President Donald Trump considered the option of housing Palestinians displaced from Gaza in Albania.
The chief democrat said that Albania does not have any kind of infrastructure to welcome them, adding that it is in a bind.
He emphasized that our country is a trafficking country and does not provide guarantees for people's lives.
"Albania doesn't have any kind of infrastructure that I can expect, it's in a rut right now.
"Albania is a country of trafficking, it does not meet any conditions, it does not provide guarantees for human lives. Has the media circulated it, yes! Rama has denied it, but can you trust Rama?" said Berisha.
United States President Donald Trump has said he may also consider Albania as a place to bring Palestinians displaced from the Gaza Strip.
In his meeting with the king of Jordan, Trump was asked by reporters whether he was considering other countries to send Palestinians besides Egypt, such as Albania or Indonesia?
"Yes, of course. There are many other countries that want to be involved," Trump replied.
Prime Minister Edi Rama, in a post on January 27, declared that the news circulating on X, published by an Israeli journalist, that Albania is in negotiations with the Trump administration to host 100,000 citizens from Gaza, was false.
Rama expressed that he stands in full solidarity with the people of Gaza, but emphasizes that Albania has neither been asked nor can it assume the responsibility to shelter citizens from Gaza.
Among other things, he writes that Albania is not in the Middle East itself, but in Europe and as a country of this continent, says the head of government, "we cannot do more than any other European country on such an issue."
"We wish and pray that the Palestinian people will be given the chance to live in their own state, as free people under democratic rule, and that Hamas will never again be able to harm Israel – or, above all, the Palestinians themselves ," Rama concluded the post.
I haven't heard something so false in a long time – and there has been a lot of fake news lately! It is absolutely not true.
Full respect and solidarity for the people of Gaza, who have been dehumanized by the savage Hamas regime and have endured a diabolical war after the medieval horrors of October 7. But let me be clear: Albania has not been asked by anyone, and neither can we. even think of taking on any such responsibility.
We are proud of our strong friendships with Israel, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and, of course, with the Palestinian people, whose state Albania recognized long ago.
But Albania is not in the Middle East itself and from the heart of Europe, we cannot do more than any other European country on such an issue. However, we wish and pray that the Palestinian people will be given the chance to live in their own state, as free people under democratic rule, and that Hamas will never again be able to harm Israel – or, above all, the Palestinians themselves.
Claims of Israeli journalist Amit Segal:
"Next stop, Albania"
The Trump administration is in negotiations with the government in Tirana to welcome over 100,000 citizens from Gaza to Albania.
Israeli sources believe that Egypt and Jordan will refuse to host refugees and claim that Albania and Indonesia are more likely/feasible options .
What is Trump's plan for Gaza?
United States President Donald Trump has floated the idea of resettling the population of Gaza to other countries and for the United States to take control of Gaza to rebuild it.
President Trump's plan has found support in Israel, but the Arab world and Palestinian leaders strongly oppose it.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty has said there is an "Arab consensus" to oppose the transfer of Palestinians.
Meanwhile, a senior Hamas official criticized President Trump's comments, calling them "absurd . "
Hamas political bureau member Izzat al-Rishq said Trump's comments "reflect a profound ignorance about Palestine and the region."
Israel and Hamas are in the process of implementing a six-week ceasefire, during which Hamas is releasing dozens of hostages kidnapped on October 7, 2023 in exchange for 2,000 Palestinian prisoners.
Since the ceasefire began last month, the sides have made five exchanges, during which 21 hostages and more than 730 prisoners were released. The next exchange is scheduled for Saturday, when three Israeli hostages are expected to be released in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.
