Former Foreign Minister, Ditmir Bushati , has reacted sharply to the statement of the Serbian Foreign Minister about the opening of a Serbian Consulate in Shkodra, warning that, if the alleged agreement with the Albanian government is true, it constitutes a serious strategic and political mistake, with consequences for national interests.

Bushati has strongly opposed the plan made public by the Serbian Foreign Minister to open a Serbian Consulate in Shkodra, questioning an alleged agreement between Belgrade and Tirana.

"I hope that the news given by the Serbian Foreign Minister and the alleged agreement with the Albanian counterpart for the opening of the Serbian Consulate in Shkodra is not true," Bushati said.

According to the former Albanian chief diplomat, if this plan turns out to be true, it would constitute a strategic mistake that is not based on any historical or demographic reality.

Ditmir Bushati's reaction:

I hope that the news given by the Serbian Foreign Minister and the alleged agreement with the Albanian counterpart to open the Serbian Consulate in Shkodra is not true.

Strategically, it would be wrong.

A Serbian consulate in Shkodra does not reflect the historical reality, the weight of the Serbian minority in the area, and unfairly places equal signs with the Albanians living in the Presevo Valley.

It would be equally wrong on a tactical level, as the language of senior Serbian officials is at the height of extremism in relation to ethnic cleansing in Kosovo.

And a slap in the face to Montenegro, when it is known that Serbia has not given up on assimilation practices towards the Montenegrin minority living in Albania.
