The latest progress report of the European Commission for Albania has evaluated the latter's progress on the path of reforms related to the integration process, while warning the country not to introduce the Golden Passport program.
According to the draft report that will be officially published today, a copy of which has been published by the Voice of America, among the main concerns remains corruption, while the Balkan country has been asked to give up the idea of introducing citizenship. from the Investment Program, also known as the Golden Passport program, reports SchengenVisanfo.com.
"Albania should abandon the development of a citizenship scheme for investors (golden passports) as it would present risks, as it relates to security, money laundering, tax evasion, terrorist financing, corruption and organized crime infiltration and would be incompatible with EU norms", the latest report states.
This is not the first time that the European Commission calls on Albania not to take such a step. In August, the Commission asked Albania to abandon the idea of introducing the Golden Passport scheme as, according to the Commission, it conflicts with European Union legislation and also poses a significant risk to Albania's membership of the bloc.
Albania's progress report last year also emphasized the fact that the creation of such a program poses a risk to the country's security, among other things.
“On citizenship rights, a provision of the Citizenship Law, passed in July 2020, could still lead to the creation of an investor Golden Passport scheme. Such programs present risks related to security, money laundering, tax evasion, terrorist financing, corruption and infiltration by organized crime and are incompatible with the EU acquis. Therefore, as a candidate country, Albania should refrain from developing such a scheme", the report emphasizes.
Through the Golden Passport scheme, internationals are entitled to citizenship in countries that run such schemes, provided they meet specific conditions and invest a certain amount of money in a certain country.
To this point, several European countries have introduced such programs; however, they have often been criticized for being involved in many illegal affairs, such as money laundering and corruption.
Also, the authorities in European countries, as well as the European Commission, have repeatedly asked all countries that have introduced such a program to stop them as soon as possible.
However, the issue has often raised controversy, while some authorities in Albania have emphasized that they do not share the same opinion with the Commission.
Authorities in Albania previously stressed that there is nothing to worry about the Golden Passport scheme as according to them, the granting of citizenship as well as security checks would be kept under state jurisdiction./Taken from Schengen Visanfo.com adapted VoxNews .
