Foreign Minister: We are making reforms, the EU must now keep its promise to

Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Ferit Hoxha, has stated that the credibility of the European Union enlargement process depends not only on the reforms of the candidate countries, but also on the EU's willingness to respect its commitments.

In an interview with RTL Today, Hoxha said that Albania has advanced rapidly in membership negotiations, having opened all six chapters within 13 months and passed the interim assessment for the "Fundamentals" chapter.

"While waiting, we didn't stop looking at the stars. We worked. We put our teams to work. We prepared," said Hoxha, emphasizing that the country's progress is the result of continuous work.

The minister acknowledged that Albania still has a long way to go in areas such as the fight against corruption, the functioning of justice, media freedom, and environmental protection.

"Negotiations are about the gap - where we are today, where we need to get to, and how we will close it," he said.

Hoxha insisted that the process must remain based on merit, but stressed that this principle must apply to both parties.

"The merit-based process must work both ways. We make commitments and make reforms, but the European Union must also keep its part of the deal," he declared.

According to the minister, a candidate country that meets the established conditions should be allowed to move forward in the process, as any unjustified delay damages citizens' trust and makes it more difficult to support reforms.

"Don't waste a moment, a minute, an hour. Work, work, work," was his message to the Albanian administration.

Hoxha also expressed his support for the gradual integration of candidate countries into European structures even before full membership.

He emphasized that Albania is now fully aligned with the European Union's common foreign and security policy.

"Everything they discuss becomes ours. So why not be present as observers? We can't vote, but we can exchange ideas, learn and prepare," he said.

Speaking about Albania's strategic orientation, Hoxha emphasized that the European choice is not partial.

"When you make a choice, like we did to join the European Union, it's not like a menu. We get the whole package," the minister declared.

At the end of the interview, he described European integration as the most important project for the country.

"For us, it is a lifeline. It is crucial. It is the only project. This is our future," Hoxha said.
