French media: Russian threat could accelerate Albania's EU membership

Albania's process of membership in the European Union may be accelerated as a result of the occupation of Ukraine by Russia. This is the conclusion reached by the French media Liberation .

Through an article on Albania and its role in the Balkans, the French media writes that the intentions of the West towards Albania and the region are clear; to unite politically and militarily strengthen the Western Balkans.

Referring to the deployment of the NATO base in Kuçova, Liberation writes that this new operational center of the Alliance forces places the Western Balkans at strategic points opposite the Western countries.

"75 rusty Soviet fighter jets appear along the runway of Kuçova military airport, the former communist military base. But this base to host NATO's new operational center is ready to regain its luster. "The renovation of this part started in 2018, while it was accelerated by the Ukrainian crisis, which favors cooperation within the camp against the West against Putin and strengthens the protection of territories in which the conflict can extend," Liberation writes.

"The new global security environment has now given a significant impetus to the completion of the project," a NATO official told AFP, referring to the Kucova base.

Runway restoration, control tower modernization, construction of new storage units. The base, which ends in 2023, is funded by transatlantic alliance funds, which have already allocated more than 51m euros since the project began in 2018.

Offering support to existing NATO forces, particularly at Camp Bondsteel in the southern part of Kosovo, the Kucova air base will be a key strategic asset in a politically unstable region such as the Western Balkans.
