Dear friends,
With deep gratitude for all the letters and words of support that you have sent me and continue to send me every day, which I greatly appreciate, I am also publishing this encouraging letter from my friend, the Mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem ?mamo?lu, whom I thank from the bottom of my heart.
Honorable Mayor, my dear friend Erion,
From where I am detained in Silivri Prison in Istanbul, I received with deep satisfaction the news that the Constitutional Court of Albania has restored your democratically won mandate as the elected Mayor of Tirana. I would like to convey to you my warmest and most heartfelt congratulations on this encouraging and significant step towards the restoration of justice and democracy. I understand that at this stage you may continue to face restrictions on your freedom, and I want you to know that during this time you are in my thoughts and have my full solidarity.
This decision represents much more than a moment of personal relief. It stands as an important sign of faith in democratic governance, the rule of law, and the sovereign will of the people of Tirana. At a time when justice and institutional integrity are being tested in many parts of the world, this decision renews the conviction that justice, even when delayed, cannot be denied.
Your quiet strength, moral clarity, and unwavering commitment to public service throughout this difficult period have been deeply inspiring. Under your leadership in Tirana and your dedication to the B40 Balkan Cities Network, you have shown that democracy is not sustained by institutions alone, but by those who defend it with courage, integrity, and conviction.
As defenders of democracy, our shared experiences reveal a truth that transcends borders. The fight for democracy in one place is, in essence, a fight for democracy everywhere. Every stand for justice and every defense of the rule of law strengthens the common effort that binds free and just societies together.
Your resilience in the face of challenges continues to inspire those who believe in democracy and justice. The road ahead may still bring difficulties, yet your example gives strength to many who remain committed to democratic values.
On this significant occasion, I would like to express my deepest solidarity, admiration and friendship. I look forward to meeting again in the near future as colleagues, friends and steadfast believers in the promise of democracy.
With warm greetings and unwavering respect,
Ekrem ?mamo?lu
Mayor-elect of Istanbul
