The United Nations General Assembly voted by an overwhelming majority to approve a declaration that paves the way for the creation of the state of Palestine.

The 7-page declaration is the result of an international conference at the UN in July, hosted by Saudi Arabia and France, on the decades-long conflict.

The United States and Israel boycotted the declaration, while Albania abstained.

In total, the resolution received 142 votes in favor and 10 against, while 12 countries abstained.

"For those who want peace, come and join us. For those who want to save lives, come and join us. For those who want to end the war in Gaza, this aggression, come and join us. For those who want to release the hostages and prisoners, come and join us. For those who want to end the food denial and hunger strike against the Palestinian people in Gaza, come and join us. For those who want to rebuild the Gaza Strip, come and join us," the Palestinian observer said.

The vote comes ahead of a meeting of world leaders on September 22 at the UN's high-level General Assembly, where Britain, France, Canada, Australia and Belgium are expected to formally recognize a Palestinian state. The statement adopted by the 193-member General Assembly condemns attacks on Israel by Palestinian militants Hamas on October 7, 2023, which sparked the war in Gaza.

"The statement involves a disturbing moral equivalence and fails to recognize the reality that Hamas' terrorism on October 7 was the reason this war was necessary, and its refusal to release hostages and surrender weapons is the reason this war continues. The version of the statement being voted on at the UN continues to contain language that supports the so-called right of return. Which would mean the demographic death of Israel as a Jewish state. For these reasons, the United States urges delegations to join us in voting against the resolution," said Morgan Ortagus, US ambassador to the UN.

The resolution also condemns Israel's attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure in Gaza, the siege and starvation, "which have resulted in a devastating humanitarian catastrophe and protection crisis."

The statement backed by the resolution says the war in Gaza "must end now" and supports the deployment of a temporary international stabilization mission mandated by the UN Security Council.
