Kathimerini: Greece's first "blockade" is established for
Fredi Beleri/ Edi Rama

Greece has imposed the first blockade against Albania regarding the country's integration into the European Union, due to the "Beleri" case.

Greek media Kathimerini  reports that official Athens has refused to sign a joint letter of 27 EU member states for Albania to open negotiations.

"An essential escalation of the harsh attitude towards Tirana due to the continuous violation of the rights of the imprisoned mayor of Himara, Fredi Beleri, is represented by Greece's decision not to give consent to a joint letter of the 27 EU member states- for the start of negotiations for the first group of membership funds", writes Kathimerini.

Although a formula was found to advance negotiations on this specific chapter with North Macedonia, after Bulgaria accepted the compromise proposal presented by the Spanish presidency, this was not done for Albania.

"The candidacies of Albania and North Macedonia are connected, so this development constitutes a practical separation of the two candidacies", reports the Greek media.

It is worth noting that the first package on the fundamental issues to be resolved by each candidate country includes five chapters, namely those related to:

•  First  , the judiciary and fundamental rights.

•  Second  , Justice, freedom and security.

•  Third  , public procurement.

•  Fourth  , statistics.

• And  fifth  , financial control.

The Greek media draws attention to the fact that a few days ago the progress report of the candidates for membership in the EU was made public, with an indirect but not clear reference to the complications caused by the Beleri case in Greek-Albanian relations.

The Greek newspaper Kathimerini writes that this attitude of Greece can change if Edi Rama changes his attitude.

"It is clear that Athens  can revise its position if Tirana moves forward to show that there is room for discussion and not a show of force on the part of Mr. Rama, inside or outside," the article reads  .

Athens has requested at all possible levels that Fredi Beler be given the opportunity to be sworn in as the mayor of Himara, which has so far been rejected by the Albanian courts, the article adds.

The next session of GJKKO where Beleri will appear in court will take place on November 22, but in the meantime a new trial is expected to be scheduled for the special permission he is seeking to take the oath.

"The last time the Albanian courts rejected such a request was on June 26, while the numerous requests of Beleri's lawyers for the repetition of such a process were rejected without much hesitation by the Albanian authorities," writes the Greek media.

"The road is certainly long until the finalization of the process for Beler, while next month the discussions at the European level will be intensified for Albania's progress. Although there are many pressures in Athens and from many directions, at the same time there is also the perception of the constructive attitude that Greece maintains without extremes, but with full respect for the means that each EU member state has and in this case the  obligation of use", concludes Kathimerini.
