The Socialist Party has decided to run in Tepelena with Gramoz Sako for the position of mayor. Sako, who is known for his ten-year career as Commander of the Republic Guard, is originally from Nivica in Tepelena.

The surprise candidate comes after the handover of the mayoral mandate by Tërmet Peçi, who became a member of parliament. 

The District Head, Mirela Kumbaro, has confirmed his candidacy, arguing that the selection was made without any long list of candidates from Tepelena, with the aim of raising the profile of the Municipality and giving new energy to the Municipality of Tepelena, which she says is experiencing a new wave of economic growth from mountain tourism and improved road infrastructure. 

Meanwhile, the Democratic Party has as its main candidate the well-known local lawyer, Malo Sadiku.
