An interesting moment happened during the session of the European Parliament this Wednesday. Irish MEP Ciaran Cuffe delivered a speech wearing the Albanian national team jersey.

During his speech, he said that Albania has made progress in the integration process and stressed that the time has come to immediately open negotiations for EU membership.

"The war in Ukraine has shown us that peace is fragile. In the 1990s, the countries of the Western Balkans reminded us of this. We must never forget that only through dialogue can we overcome hatred, violence and clashes between nations.

The European Union is a forum for member states to find compromises through words, not weapons. By invading Ukraine, Russia challenged these core values. The countries of the Western Balkans share these values ​​with us, but the spectrum of war weighs on the region.

I have been to Albania recently, as you can see and I saw for the first time the growing frustration with the European integration process. Albania has made great efforts and we must immediately open membership negotiations.

"If we do not, not only will we not be at the height of our responsibilities, but we risk increasing the intervention of those who desecrate our values," Cuffe said.

The Albanian national team jersey was donated to the MEP by the chairman of the socialist parliamentary group, Taulant Balla.
