In Tirana, Foreign Minister Olta Xhaçka said today that Albania is preparing for the start of talks with Greece to reach a compromise for sending the issue of determining the maritime border to the International Court of Justice.
It has been more than two years since the two countries agreed to refer you to an international arbitrator, after earlier attempts at a bilateral settlement failed to yield a result.
Minister Xhaçka explained that technical work is continuing that will lead to new negotiations with Greece, the aim of which this time is for the parties to agree on the questions they will ask the Court, or the points of disagreement between them, in order to which should require the interpretation of the Court.
In order to enter into these talks, as Minister Xhaçka announced, it will be necessary to first receive authorization from President Bajram Begaj to give full power to the negotiating group.
A few weeks ago, during his second visit to Tirana in a few months, the Greek Foreign Minister, Nikos Dendias, urged the acceleration of the process to reach a compromise for sending the case to the International Court of Justice.
Minister Xhaçka stated that a package of issues is being discussed with Greece."We are discussing how we will work together to overcome and address many problems that we have inherited from the past, issues that are in the interest of both our countries. We have the understanding to address and resolve the entire range of issues that are still outstanding. It is not only about the delimitation of the maritime space, but also about other inherited issues, such as the repeal of the so-called law of war, as well as the legal effects that derive from it, as far as property rights are concerned, but also the issues of respect and protection of human rights, here and across the border", announced Mrs. Xhaçka, announcing that "we have worked and completed, and two important agreements for the repair and maintenance of the border pyramids and for border incidents"./VOA
