Mane Driza, the Albanian serial killer

Mane Driza, the 48-year-old Albanian known by the nicknames " Tony Montana" or "Scarface " (The Man with Wings), has entered the history of crime as one of the most cold-blooded serial killers, executing five people in three different countries in less than three years.

Driza's bloody evening began when he was only 18 years old. Due to a blood feud and revenge following a previous criminal conflict with 33-year-old Lavdosh Kanani, Mane Driza together with his father tracked down the latter and shot him to death.

While leaving the crime scene, Driza encountered Lavdoshi's 71-year-old father, Elmaz Kanani, and executed him as well to eliminate any witnesses.

After the double murder, Driza fled Albania to the United Kingdom using the false name "Sokol Drenova." There he began living in a flat with another Albanian, Stefan Mone.

In June 1999, Stefan Mone gave his pregnant girlfriend a gold wedding ring he had found in the apartment. Unbeknownst to him, the ring belonged to Mane Driza. That same night, Driza launched a brutal attack on Mone with an iron fist and a knife, repeatedly hitting her and causing over 120 fatal wounds.

Immediately after the London murder, he flew to Italy, where he would kill again just six months later. Mane Driza shot and killed two men, Artan Maskaj and Albert Blushaj, leaving them dead on the spot.

He attempted to kill a third person named Lefter Maskaj, but his gun jammed, allowing the target to escape. Italian police quickly tracked Driza down and arrested him the next day, ending his bloody cross-border journey.

For his macabre crimes, Driza faced the justice of three countries: In December 2001, an Albanian court sentenced him in absentia to 25 years in prison, in June 2002, an Italian court sentenced him to 30 years in prison for complicity in murder and attempted murder, in 2019, a court in the United Kingdom also sentenced him to 20 years in prison.

His prison sentence in Italy was due to end in 2026, but in July 2023, the UK and Albania reached an agreement. Mane Driza would be extradited to Albania to serve the remaining sentences of more than 20 years in prison imposed by both the UK and Albania.
